How it works!
Diamond Cut Productions has developed a digital software program designed for sound restoration of audio recordings. Diamond Cut Audio Restoration Tools DCart is an MS Windows based program that removes ticks, pops, crackle, buzzes and surface noise from any recording. It gives the sound studio all of the software tools necessary to perform high quality mono or stereo noise reduction. In addition DCart is a powerful audio wave file editor for use in general audio' applications. DCart is effective for "cleaning up" old cylinder recordings, hill and dale Edison Diamond Discs (verticals), old 78's (laterals), and of course, modern vinyl LP's and 45 rpm records. DCart can be used for sound restoration, special effects', or professional studio sound applications such as:
Restoration of worn out Vinyl LPs and 78s to modern audio standards Restoration and preservation of historic and one-of-a-kind recordings. Removing buzzes, hums, and audience noise from live performances. Single Ended noise reduction of old analog tape recordings.
Cleaning up old optical and magnetic movie soundtracks.
Improving the intelligibility of surveillance recordings and recorded telephone conversations.
Removing static and noise from AM, FM or Short Wave radio broadcasts.
Providing a graphical means for analyzing the noise content of audio recordings.
Wave file editing using Cut, Copy and Paste functions on selected sections or entire wave files.
Providing special audio effects and equalization for movie, radio, television or stage use.
General purpose audio applications in forensics laboratories.
Use as an instructional aid for teaching the principles of Digital Signal Processing.
Here is a list of the functions that are used in DCart.
Real-Time Preview of all filter functions for instant evaluation of parameters.
An Impulse Noise filter for removing "ticks", "clicks", and "pops" from a recording.
Continuous Noise (Hiss) and Crackle filter for removing surface noise.
Dynamic Filter function similar to analog noise units, to reduce "Hiss" from an audio signal.
Lowpass, Bandpass, and Highpass filters with lst, 2nd or 3rd order slopes.
1 0-band Graphic Equalizer to equalize your recordings to create a more pleasing tonal balance.
Cut, Copy, and Paste sections or entire wave files.
Perform mono and stereo file conversions, gain and channel balance adjustments.
Tunable Notch filter for attenuation of Hum or Acoustical Feedback from a recording.
Record and playback audio signals onto your computers hard drive at various sample rates.
Fade in, Fade out and Gain change functions with either a linear or a logarithmic envelope vs. time.
Continuously variable Zoom-In and Zoom-Out functions for precise editing.
Mute a portion of your wave file. This is useful for ridding a file of stubborn "pops" or "thuds."
Sine and square wave generator for system level setting and testing.
Spectrum analysis to aid in noise removal and frequency identification.
Adjustable markers for sample accurate editing.
On-Line Audio Restoration Tutorial included with comprehensive Help file.
It is important to emphasize that DCart performs its editing in a non-destructive manner. The source file remains unmodified; only the destination file receives the modifications. Not all wave file editing programs work in this manner, and some actually modify the source file directly on your hard drive.
Note: All of the algorithms used in DCart use double precision floating point math to ensure high quality audio performance.
This program has been used on two of Diamond Cut Productions Edison Lateral series releases. Its performance can be auditioned on "The California Ramblers --- Edison Laterals 2" and also "Hot Dance of the Roaring 20's --Edison Laterals 3". Other labels such as the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings have used this program to clean up several songs on their "American Songbook Series". And County Records used DCart to produce their release entitled "Ernest Stoneman and his Dixie Mountaineers".
